Clang Clang Clang Goes the Trolley, Part II
by Tim Hendrix - June 26, 2003
1873-1963
In a 1947, a Public Utilities Commission report stated "It is estimated
that rail rapid transit in a freeway can be provided at approximately 15-20%
additional to the cost of the freeway alone, while a separate rapid transit
system... would cost several times this amount."
This recommendation, in tandem with the establishment of a postwar state gas
tax, LA's plans of massive "freeway" construction and expansion, and
the PE's and LATL's existing rights-of-way, seemed like a slam dunk. [more]

The Los Angeles History section has always been on the boards here at Nocturne, but we could never decide just where to start. Tim finally chose one of his favorite episodes - we'll branch out from here, adding a new chapter with each newsletter. In keeping with the theme of Nocturne, these stories will always focus on the darker side of Los Angeles' past. You won't find them in the tourist guides, nor do we plan to visit recent stories unless they can be tied to past scandals. Our tales aren't very well known, and as such are sometimes difficult to research. If you find a mistake or can add to an article, or even have an obscure and lurid tale of your own, please drop us a line - any & all feedback is welcomed and encouraged.
