Out With The Old...
Ugh. Termites. Plus rot.
It had to go, and soon, before the bugs made their way over to our actual house. Plus it was made with redwood, which looked dorky when compared to the rest of the deck, which was coming along nicely.
The previous owner hadn't spent a lot of money putting this thing in. Plus, with the rot, it was going to come out very easily, a point driven home by the fact that just walking across it you risked an ankle-break.
We started with a little sledgehammer - one strike usually did the trick in knocking out the old boards.
Then the supports, which were eaten through, had to go. They were fastened only at each end - one end was bolted to the deck, the other to the concrete pad that was our "back yard".
We got to use our Sawzall! If you have done anything in your home, and haven't gotten yourself a Sawzall, you don't know what you're missing. Fun! Cuts through nails and other small metal bits like butter.
