Los Angeles Nocturne's
Vampire Movies

Blade
BLADE (1998) *** IMDb

A clever variation on the vampire genre. We all know that there are lots of vampires in Los Angeles - and lots of movies about vampires in Los Angeles. Wesley Snipes makes a great semi-vamp fighting his birthright and the new generations of vampires trying to take over the world. Great action effects, and an all-around entertaining flick. Look for the sequel coming soon!

"The world you live in is just a sugar-coated topping. There is another world beneath it. The real world."

Cool Stuff

Buffy the Vampire Slayer  BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER (1992) *** IMDb

The movie that started it all - the series, the spinoffs, the merchandise, the fan fiction. Written by Joss Whedon, it pokes fun at itself much more than the series do - this movie is actually better on repeated viewing. A fun Saturday afternoon matinee, with a big bowl of popcorn and M'n'M's.

"Don't you get it? I don't want to be the Chosen One. I don't want to spend the rest of my life chasing after vampires. All I want to do is graduate from high school, go to Europe, marry Christian Slater, and die!"

Draculas Dog

DRACULA'S DOG (aka Zoltan, Hound of Dracula) (1978) * (strictly for the cheese factor) IMDb

Russian soldiers bring Dracula's dog back to life. The evil pet travels to Los Angeles where the last "living" descendants of Dracula live. With Jose Ferrer as the Van Helsing type. No, we're not kidding.

"Grrrrrrrrrrrr."

MODERN VAMPIRES (1998) *1/2 IMDb

Sounded like one of those direct-to-video flicks (if it hit the big screen, I completely missed it) that might develop a cult following... I only wish that was true. The acting is fine, though a little overblown (with Rod Steiger! as Van Helsing, who hooks up with the Crips to fight the vamps) and an early scene with Kim Cattrall stuffing a body into a truck is priceless, but it all goes downhill from there. If you need to see EVERY SINGLE Los Angeles vampire movie, you'll have to rent this one, but it's too cheesy to be a straight-ahead movie, and too straight-ahead to fall into the camp category.

Omega Man OMEGA MAN (1971) ** IMDb

A Los Angeles doctor is one a few survivors of biological warfare, and all but the doctor have become psychotic, nocturnal freaks. Based on the novel "I Am Legend" by Richard Matheson about vampires taking over the world, and previously made as "Last Man on Earth" with Vincent Price. Worth seeing, especially on that special evening when you feel like staying indoors.
