Q: How do I do After Dark Splendor
(Good Mixer, Wave of Elegance, &c.) on my own hair?
A: I don't know!
I bought a collection of 100 salon photographs, and I liked the way
they looked. I have the pictures, but none of the instructions - presumably
back then, the beauty operators knew how to put the styles together.
If you have a really good stylist, take a photograph with you. Each
of the styles can be put together using the three methods on the site
- Rolls, Pin Curls, and (coming soon) Finger Waves - plus judicious
use of pins, combs, and hairspray.
Q: I have
really long hair, down to my shoulder blades (waist, butt, &c.)
Are there any styles that I can do?
A: Yes and no.
Look at the old movies, and at old photographs of the era. During
the 30s, most womens' hair was not longer than their shoulders, and
curled up to the nape of the neck. During the 40s, styles became somewhat
looser and longer, but were generally still no longer than the shoulder
blades. However, it is possible to make your hair styles acceptable
for the time. Coming soon - a long hair page, with photos from some
of the successful methods for containing all that hair.
Q: Why don't you have pictures of the
pin curls up?
A: Because.
I took pictures during the last workshop, but they didn't come out.
I'm planning an eventual photo shoot with some friends, showing all
the steps, but until then you'll have to muddle through with the written
instructions. I had someone walk through them step-by-step, and they
worked for her - give it a try, or be patient and the photos will
be up eventually.
Q: Why
don't you have instructions for finger waves yet?
A: Finger waves are
the most difficult to describe. It's very much a tactile procedure,
and written instructions aren't enough. Even photographs won't properly
describe it. Plus Alicia, our hair dresser, has been taking some time
off. Eventually we'll have photographs, and probably even video, of
finger waves going in.
